Richard Finney, one of Donegal’s best-known entrepreneurs, has passed away.
The Counter Deli team has announced the sudden passing of their ‘main man’ Richard, an innovator and passionate promotor of world wines, artisan food and coffee.
Originally from Lisburn, Richard and his wife Olivia ran the popular Wine Buff store in Letterkenny from 2008 before going independent. The Counter Deli grew to become a trailblazing wine and food store, before expanding into a deli and cafe.
Richard’s passion for proper coffee led him to set up Donegal’s first speciality coffee roastery, New Kid Coffee, at Bonagee.
Richard always sought out quality and knowledge, and his expertise in his products always shone through. Customers loved to seek his advice on gifts and gatherings, and his food and drinks events were among the best in the region.
His passing will be dearly missed by his staff, customers, wide circle of friends and the entire business community.
He is mourned by his wife Olivia and children Mia and Matthew.
The Counter Deli team shared this heartfelt celebration of Richard’s life:
“Richard was a gentle giant who had time for everyone – he was an absolute gent who was always up for a laugh and a bit of craic. He was also an inspirational entrepreneur and became an expert in anything he set his mind to – accountancy (though he would prefer we didn’t draw attention to this!), wine and let’s not forget a quality cup of coffee! Together with Olivia, he built the Counter and, more recently, New Kid Coffee from scratch – two amazing businesses loved by locals here in Letterkenny and across all of Ireland.
“If this wasn’t enough, Richard loved extra-curricular activities too! He had a keen interest in guitars and was known to belt out a wee tune with Mia and Matthew on vocals at any given opportunity. He also helped to coach the local football team and loved seeing the lads progress. And then there were his DIY skills……maybe the least said about them the better….!
“If ever there was proof that a husband and wife can work together, it was Richard and Olivia. After that initial gaze over the calculators at EY, they had eyes for no-one else! It’s difficult to find the words to say but, put simply, Olivia was the ying to Richard’s yang and they made the BEST team.”
“Richard was loved by all and, as a mark of respect to the main man, the Counter will be closed for the rest of this week. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of Richard’s family.”
Bonagee United have paid also tribute to Richard as the coach of the Bonagee United U12 ‘Arcade’ team. Richard’s ‘New Kid Coffee’ also proudly adorned the jerseys.
“Our sincere sympathies are extended to his wife Olivia, children Mia and Matthew and all of the extended Finney family.”
May he rest in peace
