Two inspirational Donegal boys enjoyed unforgettable red carpet moments with their families at the recent LauraLynn Oscars.
Rory McDevitt and Oisin Campbell, both from Gweedore, played starring roles in their own films which scooped prestigious prizes at a premiere in Dublin.
The LauraLynn Oscars is a digital storytelling initiative for children with life-limiting conditions and their families to create professionally made movies. It culminates in a glamorous red-carpet event, offering a once-in-lifetime movie premiere experience for the entire family.
Rory’s Oscar was for his starring role in his movie “The Incredible McDevitt’s”. The story goes: In the heart of Donegal, the McDevitt family aren’t all that they seem. Clare and Alan think they in fact live an ordinary life, however the McDevitt children are keeping a super powered secret. With trouble just around the corner, here’s hoping that Lucas, Cora Louise, Lorcan…….. and Rory have what it takes to stop evil in its tracks.
Rory’s mum, Claire said: ”The whole experience from the minute we met with the team and script writers to filming and then seeing it all on screen, there are no words to describe this other than magical, what wonderful life lasting memories we have made with thanks to the team at LauraLynn.”
Oisin took to the big screen for his premiere of ‘March of the Penguin’. The plot of his movie is this: An emotional storm descends upon the Gweedore Gaeltacht when Oisín’s favourite toy penguin goes missing. No stone goes unturned to try to return him to his rightful home. With the love from family, a political storm, and a poster on every door, surely, he will find his way back into the arms of his loved ones.
Oisin’s mum Fionnuala added: “The Oscars truly has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us as a family. Oisin has had an amazing time and we have made such incredible memories as a family.”
The idea for the Oscars project which is now in its sixth year began as a film workshop for siblings, which LauraLynn Play Therapist Michelle Hartnett, organised after researching the topic of sibling loss. The project quickly developed into a larger family-focused event.
The project is coordinated by Senior Play Therapist, Michelle Hartnett and Project Coordinator, Lorna Collins with support from long standing LauraLynn volunteer Joanna Butler and a team of industry professionals and volunteers.
When not being movie stars, Rory and Oisin both help their local gardaí as honorary members of the force through the Little Blue Heroes charity.
