There is an increasing demand within the sports performance industry in Ireland for skilled sports performance practitioners. Such practitioners need to be comfortable in the lab or in a sports science setting and capable of translating complex scientific information into usable information for coaches, athletes, and teams to enhance performance.
The academic team at ATU identified a gap in the market for these skills and, as a result, developed their Level 9 MSc in Sports Performance Practice.
This is a part-time, blended course that is delivered over 2 years at ATU’s Letterkenny campus and is suited to those who are working full-time and wish to study part-time. This MSc can also be completed in 1 year through full-time study.
Graduate of the MSc in Sports Performance Practice, Shane Porter says the practical elements of this course gave him a platform and the confidence to work with teams such as Donegal GAA Academy and Monaghan GAA Senior team.
Shane said: “I found the practical classes on the MSc in Sports Performance Practice very beneficial. For our Strength & Conditioning module for example, we were able to take in 4-5 students from a variety of sporting backgrounds and put them through a personalised 12-week programme. We were also able to have practical experiences in performance analysis by videoing a game of your choice, your sport, or your team and then we analysed the footage on campus with the help of the academic team”.
This online Masters is suited to those working in the area of sports who would like to advance their knowledge and understanding of the science behind sports performance practice, particularly within the core areas of exercise physiology, sports nutrition, and strength and conditioning.
Dr Rónán Doherty, Lecturer in Sports Performance Practice at ATU, says: “This course is highly innovative and flexible. It is mainly delivered part-time online meaning it is suited to those who are working full-time. We have a 2-day on-campus attendance requirement in each semester but other than that, it’s fully online.”
One of the benefits to graduates from this Level 9 course is the career opportunities within this sector. Graduates can pursue careers as sports scientists, performance nutritionists, exercise physiologists, strength and conditioning coaches, high-performance coaches, teachers and physical educators as well as careers in sports leadership and management and much more.
