Dungloe man Padraig Monaghan has confirmed he is to retire as CEO of Optum Ireland next year.
Staff at the healthcare services provider in Letterkenny were informed of the decision last week.
The company supplies healthcare systems around the world and employs over 200 people at their Windyhall facility.
Posting on LinkedIn, Mr Monaghan said it was with ‘mixed emotions and a lot of excitement for the future’ that he recently announced his decision to retire.
“I am immensely proud of the journey we have shared over the past 20 years at UnitedHealth Group/Optum Ireland & UK,” he said.
“This success belongs to us all. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity I have had to work alongside people I admire for a now globally rooted enterprise. It has been a privilege to contribute to the planning, development and management of our growth – from a small but exceptional team of 30 to more than 2,000 people today. And it will always remain a privilege to aid our teams working to solve the most complex problems in healthcare ‘to help people live healthier lives and to make the health system work better for everyone’.”
Mr Monaghan paid a particular thanks to the enterprise and many of his colleagues for having the vision to enable the establishment of the Ireland Health Care Scholarship Program. This, he said, has offered life enhancing opportunities to many people who have taken them up.
“Our pioneering work towards disability inclusion is similarly close to my heart and will stay with me,” he added.
“Thank you for all the kind messages I have received, and many thanks for the support of my family, who I have always relied upon. I am pleased to say that, for the future, I have no plans except to enjoy some time off and to travel… though nobody will be surprised if I make more time in my schedule to support Donegal GAA.
“But in the immediate future, I am looking forward to helping further change. I am grateful for and excited by the opportunity to work with my successor and leadership team, consolidating the foundations for the next phase of our development, and our shared story.”
