A conversation between four Manorcunningham friends earlier this year has resulted in the setting up of a much needed ‘Men’s Shed’ in the area.
Declan Glackin, Paul Doherty, Joe Mulhern and John Crawford felt there would be a demand for a place for males in order to tackle loneliness and isolation. They were aware of the ‘men’s shed’ movement, a community-based project where men can come together to learn, share skills and make long-lasting friendships together. So, they signed up and are now the latest addition to the movement in Donegal.
They soon acquired a lease on the former Irish Wheelchair Association premises on Manor’s Main Street and put all shoulders to the wheel. Later this week, they hope to open their spanking new facility for the men of the area.
“We started a conversation in May about the need for an outlet for men in the area and have been working on it since June,” Mr Glackin told Donegal Daily.
“The place was in bad shape, but it’s up to shape now – we currently have a tea room, gym and a pool table. We also have space for a workshop, but we will let the people who come through the door dictate where that will go.”
The new premises are the result of voluntary work and donations of gym equipment, paint, TVs and furniture.
“We are overwhelmed by the support, the feel good factor within the community and feel this is a positive step to addressing men’s mental health issues,” he added.
“We hope it will become an important hub in Manorcunningham and all surrounding areas and have plans for further development in the future.”
Mr Glackin concluded that the facility should be open later this week and the door will be wide open for anyone to call in to make use of the building, or just for a cup of tea and a chat.
