Tributes have been paid following the passing of the hugely popular Fintown community activist, Seamus McElwee.
A retired principal, he was the driving force behind the famous Fintown Railway as well as the local Fintown Harps. He passed away yesterday at Letterkenny University Hospital, just a month after the death of his brother, Seán.
As a mark of respect, Fintown Railway will be closed tomorrow.
Naomh Conaill GAA Club, of which he was an ardent supporter, paid a glowing tribute to Mr McElwee on their Facebook page.
“It is with profound sadness that we have learned of the sad passing of Seamus McElwee, Fintown,” their statement read.
“Seamus was a true and faithful Donegal and Naomh Conaill supporter who travelled the length and breadth of the country to follow his teams at both underage and senior level. He had a great love for the Irish language and Irish culture and served as the club’s Oifigeach na Gaeilge. He also represented the club honourably at Scór Tráth na gCeist for many years. Above all else, he was a wonderful community man whose passing will be sorely felt in Fintown and the wider parish. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.”
Predeceased by his brother Seán, he is survived by his wife Clare and sons Donal and Cathal.
He is also survived by daughters-in-law, Jennifer and Aimee, beloved grandchildren, Eunan, Éila, Thomas and Rosie, sister Sheila and brother Hugh.
Seamus will repose at his home from 4 o’clock today, until 9 pm and on Sunday from 12 noon until 9 pm. Rosary both nights at 9 pm, with family time on the morning of the funeral. Requiem Mass will be at 11 o’clock on Monday, 28th August, in St. Colmcille’s Chapel, Fintown, with burial afterwards in the adjoining graveyard.
