Fort Dunree is situated along the Lough Swilly shores just 7 miles north of Buncrana on the Inishowen Penisula.Near to the spot where Wolfe Tone was brought ashore in 1798 a small fort was erected to guard and protect against the possible return of a French invasion Fleet.The fort was mordernised and added to with the building of the “Top Fort” in the 19th Century.
Control of the Fort was transferred to the Irish Free State just before World War II. This story is told by the short film in the theatre as you enter across the drawbridge.
In its natural spectacular setting, Fort Dunree is home to a rich and varied flora and fauna, some of it unique to the area. A discovery point on the Wild Atlantic Way.In recent years Pier facilities have been developed onsite so that Kayaking, snorkelling and coasteering can now be booked in association with Inish Adventures.
Walking around Fort Dunree is undoubtedly one of the highlights of a visit to the Inishowen Peninsula. A series of signposted footpaths allow the visitor to explore at their own pace, on a clear day you can see Fanad Lighthouse, Errigal and Muckish from this majestic site.
New additions this year are the Dermot McLaughlin walled garden, a beautiful model of the Saldanha and the elephants which are here until 3rd September.
