A number of events were held in Letterkenny today to observe Ukrainian Independence Day.
Donegal Local Development Company (DLDC) and Donegal Volunteer Centre hosted the gatherings, which came 18 months after Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Ukrainian Independence Day, on August 24th, marks the country’s declaration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
DLDC facilitated the Pray for Ukraine event in the Trinity Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Letterkenny. This was a solemn gathering of people of all faiths who joined in solidarity for the people of Ukraine. Attendees united in a spirit of compassion and empathy, offering their thoughts and prayers for the well-being and stability of the Ukrainian people.
“The event emphasised the power of unity and empathy, highlighting the deep connections that bind global communities together,” a spokesperson for the organisers said.
The Donegal Volunteer Centre proudly hosted a thank you event at the Donegal County Museum for Ukrainian volunteers who contributed to Irish society.
The heart-warming gathering showcased the cultural richness of Ukraine while fostering community connections. Attendees were treated to a blend of music, food, and cultural exploration. The event started with the Ukrainian national anthem as well as a minute of silence to honour those who died fighting for independence and those who died in the war with Russia. “Ukrainian refugees, who had a guided tour of the museum, had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the history of the Independence of Ireland as well as the heritage of Donegal, fostering a deeper sense of connection between the two cultures.”
