Already hard-pressed Donegal farmers can expect to pay the highest prices in Ireland this season for a 4×4 straw bale.
Researchers for the Farming Independent were quoted between €17 to €25 for the giant squares, varying by quality and the location.
The cheapest straw was to be found in Wexford, where demand is lowest compared to supply, while Donegal was the most expensive at €25 apiece.
The delivery cost also varied greatly, with one supplier quoting over €10 per bale.
