Serious concerns have been raised about potholes and speeding in Newtowncunningham village.
The issue came to a head again this week following a number of near-miss accidents.
Sadly, in one incident, it’s reported that a little girl’s cat was run over.
Local resident Joe Cannon, who runs the Ocras Takeaway on Main Street, says that people have been waiting too long for safety measures.
Newtowncunningham’s regeneration strategy is currently underway to improve road safety and reduce the number of heavy goods vehicles travelling through the village.
But until the works are carried out, Mr Cannon says that temporary measures are needed now.
Taking to social media, he described how a serious accident was narrowly avoided on Thursday last when a vehicle took to the other side of the road on church lane ( Hamilton Bells entrance ) as the ramp was taken away and not replaced. The road has two concealed entrances on both sides of the road.
“A little girl is heart broken as she lost her cat in the incident and it could have been a lot worse. I would like on behalf of those residents to ask you to slow down and drive with caution,” Joe said.
Another issue in the village is an expanding pothole outside the Credit Union, which is posing a hazard for cyclists as well as motorists.
Joe said: “We were all told to be patient and we know the election is coming early next year and of course it will be done. This road should be inspected and upkeep should be maintained by Donegal County Council regularly instead of letting it go to which residents are saying something you’d see in the ‘Flintstones’ or in the Wild Wild West.”
