Last weekend was the turn of the Masters athletes to take on the best in the country at the All Ireland Masters Championships in Tullamore.
They certainly rose to the occasion with the 3 athletes all doing 2 events and coming away with five gold medals and a silver medal.
Firstly it was sprinter Nicole O’Donnell who won gold in 100m in a time of 13.15 secs equalling her personal best. Nicole then went on to win the 200m setting a PB of 27.28 secs. It was delight for Nicole who had an injury and has worked hard to return to fitness.
Next it was Kevin Duffy taking on the Masters for the first time and who has trained at home since early Spring. Kevin won silver in the shot putt with new PB of 9.13m and then went on to win gold in the javelin.
Lastly, it was experienced campaigner Aidan Gillespie who has squeezed in his own training while also training his son Oisin who himself secured two All Ireland medals recently. Aidan won the Long Jump with 5:45m and then wen on to secure a double gold in the High jump with a great 1.60m jump. Aidan continues as he has done over the years to show he sets very high standards.
It has been a truly successful summer for the orange vest of the Rosses AC athletes and great credit to the masters athletes who ensured they matched the recent successes of the juvenile athletes.
In the Carrickfinn coastal run 10k, superbly organized by Hugh Bonner, ran over a tough and challenging terrain but taking in the natural beauty of the area including Carrickfinn beach.
The men’s race was won by Declan Ferry with Shane O Donnell taking second ahead of Charlie Postie O Donnell in third. Paul McKelvey took the M40 crown, Ken Bates the M50 and Michael O Donnell M60. In the ladies the winner, who defended from last year, was Maria Mulligan followed by Bernie Boyle and Martina Mulhern third.
First F40 was Karen Deveney with Eimear Magee pipping Cathy Breslin for the F50 crown. Big thanks and well done to all who took part.
