The Rathmullan Tidy Towns group has won a national award for their beautiful new booklet.
Their publication on their local built heritage is called “Look again! Heritage On your Doorstep” and contained drawings from local school children.
They were one of just three organisations around the country to receive a Special Recognition Award for 2023 under the The Heritage Keepers programme.
Over 40 community groups and schools took part in the national community stewardship programme this year. The programme aims to empower people to explore and discover their own local heritage and then carry out a funded action to enhance their place. The programme is delivered by Burrenbeo Trust in partnership with the Heritage Council. Of the 40 projects completed, three were selected for Special Recognition Awards which acknowledges projects from community groups that achieved outstanding results. The award takes into account that groups who take part in Heritage Keepers are all starting at different levels.
“We are so proud of all the groups who took part in Heritage Keepers and completed so many excellent projects and actions for their local built cultural and natural heritage,” says Heritage Keepers co-ordinator Mary Dillon.
“We believe that, with the proper support, local communities are the best stewards of their own places. Whether the action is for built heritage, cultural heritage or natural heritage it all helps foster a sense of pride, ownership and ultimately a sense of responsibility towards local community and environment”.
