The young man who tragically lost his life in a crash in the early hours of this morning has been named locally as Connor McGinley (19) from Milford.
The deceased was the driver of a car that crashed into a pole outside the village of Kerrykeel shortly after 3:30am.
Another young man who was a passenger in the car was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital, but his injuries are not understood to be serious.
It is understood Mr McGinley’s vehicle went out of control and struck a pole on the main Milford to Kerrykeel Road, just a mile from Kerrykeel. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash and road conditions were said to have been poor at the time due to heavy rainfall.
Mr McGinley’s remains were removed to the mortuary at Letterkenny University Hospital earlier today.
A Garda forensics team is currently at the scene carrying out a full investigation into the possible cause of the crash.
The dead teenager was from a well-known and respected family from Drumbern in Milford, only a few kilometres from the scene. He is the third person to die on Donegal’s roads so far this year.
In a message posted on their Facebook page, Connor’s former school, Mulroy College, said they were “devastated to hear this news.”
“Our sincere condolences to all Connor’s family and friends. May he rest in peace,” they added.
The R246 road in Ranny is currently closed to allow for Garda Forensic Collision Investigators to conduct a technical examination of the scene.
Diversions via the R247 and R245 Rathmullan and Milford roads have been put in place and traffic is requested to avoid this road where possible.
