The wettest place in Ireland last month was at Met Éireann’s automatic weather station in Raphoe.
It recorded a staggering 76.4mm of rain in one day alone, on July 22, a day when east Donegal experienced severe flash flooding.
The highest daily total from the previous wettest July, in 2009, was 68.5 mm at Caherkirby, Co Cork.
The Raphoe deluge led to flooding of homes and businesses as well as road closures in the town and in the surrounding areas. A yellow rainfall warning was issued for the county.
Met Éireann’s provisional data also shows that July 2023 was the wettest July ever recorded in Ireland.
Twelve of Ireland’s weather stations, including Malin Head, reported record-breaking levels of rainfall over the month. Malin recorded 183.5 mm of rain, compared to 66.3 mm in July 2022.
