Man who flooded Donegal and Northwest with drugs jailed for 11 years

July 31, 2023

One of the northwest’s biggest drug dealers has been jailed for 11 years.

Barry Young, 38, received an 11 year sentence for directing the activities of one of the four organised crime gangs operating in Sligo.

The crimelord, from Geldof Drive in Sligo, is understood to be one of the major players supplying drugs across Donegal.

The 38-year-old ran one of the four main drugs gangs in Sligo directing 20 members operating on a hierarchical structure.

He was arrested on a plane at Dublin Airport on his way to Spain in January last year and had been planning to live there permanently.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt described Young as “a scourge” in the northwest.

Chief Superintendent Aidan Glackin said Young was involved in drug dealing in the northwest for the last 20 years and that he directed and controlled a very large organised crime gang with substantial international links.
