The final weekend of the All Ireland Juvenile u14-u19 Championships took place in Tullamore over Saturday and Sunday.
Rosses AC’s Amber and Sheila Gallagher competed in the javelin and shot put and both secure top 6 finished to end a good season for both with good progress made.
In the u14 girls long jump Annie O’Neill was disappointed to suffer an injury in her first jump ruling her out of the competition and it was up to Niamh Doogan who jumped a PB of 4.90m to secure an All Ireland bronze medal which was good reward for a committed who has worked hard all year.
Then it was on to the u15 girls high jump where Eva Logue and Faela Houston were flying the Rosses flag. Faela is still relatively new to high jump and on the day equalled her PB of 1:45m to secure a top 8 finish and know there is more to come.
Eva Logue provided the drama on Saturday almost going out at 1.55m only clearing with her last jump but steadying up to then jump a PB of 1.58m to secure the gold medal to finish of a great week for her having received an invitation to compete and represent the club in the high jump at the British Milers Club athletics meeting at the Mary Peters Track in Belfast on the Wednesday.
On Sunday Una Richardson competed in the u16 girls long jump and was disappointed on the day not to reach her potential but the talented jump knows she is well able to compete with the best in Ireland and will come back stronger.
Jack McElroy has suffered some injuries which has interrupted his training and it was great credit he won the Ulster title in the u14 boys 1500m and knows that he competed well taking everything into account and will learn from the experience at this level.
And it was down to the last event where Oisin Gillespie was in the u15 boys high jump and with a strong family tradition in this event there was expectations to perform well and the highly talented athlete was to rise to the occasion jumping 1.68m on the day and securing the gold on the back of his impressive record in the competition with 3 boys finishing on the same height.
This gold backed up a bronze Oisin won 2 weeks earlier in the long jump.
Overall another highly successful weekend for the club and after all the juvenile competitions as now competed the club has come away with an impressive haul of 15 national medals,7 of them being gold.
The underage training will now take a break for a few weeks before starting back into cross country in mid August.
The club would like to give a huge thanks to all the athletes and parents who have travelled the miles to ensure the club was represented at competitions, to the coaches who were there to support and the club officials who were there to support and offer friendly faces and advice when needed.
The focus for the adults over the next few weeks will be the local 5ks and a number of adventure races coming up.
