Creeslough tragedy inspires cousins’ marathon cycle for Mevagh Fire Service

Cousins John Naughton, John McMahon and Darren Doherty will be cycling 350km from Old Trafford, Manchester to Carrigart to raise money for the Mevagh Voluntary Fire Service in August.

Naughton will be carrying out the first 50km alone to the ferry in Liverpool before meeting up with John and Darren in Belfast, where they will follow the coast road for 300km with planned stops in Ballycastle and Derry/Londonderry.

The decision to complete the fundraiser came about following the events in Creeslough last October.

“The incident was devastating for the local community in Donegal and had a huge impact on my friends and family, many who are residents in the surrounding area,” Naughton said.

The Mevagh Fire service is staffed and run entirely from volunteers from the local areas and depends on fundraising as its primary source of income.

They have saved countless homes and lives since its inception in the mid 80s and provides a remarkable service to the remote communities in the Shiphaven Bay/Rosguill area, as was evidence during that day in Creeslough last October.

All of the money raised will provide essential equipment and training for this amazing group of individuals who give there time and effort to help protect and care for the community each and every day.
