Initiative launched to document old homesteads in Finn Valley

The Ballybofey, Stranorlar & District Historical Society has launched an initiative to compile a photographic record of old homesteads in the area.

The forward-thinking voluntary group wants as many people as possible to take photos of their own homesteads and send them into them.

“A lot of these old houses are fast disappearing,” a spokesperson for the organisation said.

“So, let us make a big effort to take some photos and tell the story about the house.”

As well as taking photographs, the society wants people to include information such as how many people lived in it and what pastimes took place there.

They intend to hold an exhibition in September or October and everyone involved will be invited to come along and see the results of their work.

Your photos and stories can be emailed to bsadhs@gmail.com or, if you are unable to do this, please contact a member of the society and they will ensure your story is told.

The cottage in the main picture is located in the backyard of Josie McCafferty’s home at Correfrin, Ballybofey. It was originally erected more than 100 years ago in the townland of Knock, about a mile away. Concerned that it would be lost forever, Josie dismantled it, transported it on a tractor and trailer, and rebuilt it in his back garden.
