Curragh Athletic FC in Killygordon kicked off their 2023 walking football programme this week by welcoming back some familiar faces from down through the years.
Without doubt the star appearance was Brian Doherty (main pic, back row third from left) whose picture on the 1971 team still stands proudly within the history cabinet within the clubhouse.
The once-nippy winger, literally, walked through the opposition on numerous occasions, tapping in a hat-trick of goals.
Walking football is becoming very popular throughout Ireland, and indeed Europe, with
several tournaments being organised in many venues. It’s very much the new health and well-being event, particularly for men who have played a bit of footie in their day. They can now meet and socialise while maybe incorporating a few talks afterwards around health and well-being as well of course the very important subject of football.
“The main activity is playing football, but actually it’s really very much more of a social event for people (men and women) to meet and socialise,” a Curragh AFC spokesperson said.
Curragh’s walking football programme is Tuesday mornings 10am -12noon (Over 50’s) and Fridays 6pm – 8pm (Over 40s).
