Footballer Paddy McCourt given suspended sentence for sex offence

July 11, 2023

Former Celtic star Paddy McCourt has been placed on the sex offenders register for five years after being found guilty of indecent assault.

The footballer was also given a three-month sentence suspended for two years.

The 39-year-old father of three, of Wheatfield Court, Muff, Co Donegal, was convicted in May of one count of sexual assault that occurred on January 30th last year.

McCourt, who has also played for Derry City, Barnsley, Brighton & Hove Albion and Finn Harps in his career, had denied the charge against him.

He is accused of touching a woman’s bottom in a bar in Derry.

BBC News reports that Judge Magill told Derry Magistrates’ Court that indecent assault was “an isolated incident” that had taken place in “a moment of madness”.

“One thing was clear was your level of intoxication,” Judge Magill told McCourt.
