A young Irishman has tragically died while on holiday on the Greek island of Ios.
He has been named as 18-year-old Andrew O’Donnell, a recent graduate from St Michael’s College in Dublin.
He was on holiday with friends when the tragedy occurred.
A tribute from his former school said: “We have learned of the tragic passing of Andrew O’Donnell, a member of our recently graduated class of 2023.
“Andrew was not only a popular classmate and friend, but a proud and committed member of our football team. He was kind to those around him, honest in all of his endeavours and a great brother to Rory (Transition Year).
“Andrew will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance.
Mr O’Donnell’s death is the second tragic incident involving young Irish tourists in Greece this week.
Rory Deegan from Cullohill in Co Laois died on the island of Zakynthos last Sunday. The 22-year-old was found dead in a swimming pool and his remains were repatriated to Ireland in recent days.
