The government is reportedly planning to split RTE services in two as part of a major reform following the secret payments scandal.
The Irish Mail reports that lay-offs could be on the horizon if the broadcaster is to be scaled down with public service and commercial functions kept separate.
The reform aims to save public service broadcasting amid the ongoing financial scandal surrounding understated payments to Ryan Tubridy.
Other proposals reportedly involve selling off 2FM radio station and a cap on all staff salaries and presenters’ pay set below the level of assistant general secretary. The paper reports that a redundancy scheme focusing on higher paid employees could feature as many as 400 layoffs.
The Government is also expected to appoint an auditor to review RTÉ finances. RTE News reports that Minister for Media Catherine Martin and Government will be granted direct oversight of RTÉ’s accounts.
