The Donegal Mountain Rescue Team (DMRT) has urged walkers to be properly prepared before setting out on their journey.
They were commenting after an incident at the weekend when a number of people got into difficulty after setting out on a mountain range with insufficient water and food.
On Saturday, DMRT were tasked by An Garda Síochána to Errigal mountain. A group of walkers had set out from the Miners Path on Muckish to cover the Seven Sisters trail and, once atop Errigal, were suffering from fatigue and dehydration.
“Team members began making their way to assist the walkers before receiving an update that those involved had successfully descended the mountain without assistance,” a DMRT spokesperson said.
“Our team leader proceeded to Errigal to meet the walkers and confirm in person that they were safe. They were provided with water and food and were deemed stable to return home.”
The spokesperson has the following advice for people before setting out on their walk or climb.
“The weather, as you all know, has been very warm recently. It may not be sunny out, but dehydration can set in quickly with these higher temperatures. Always make sure you have adequate water and food with you before heading out the door, as well as appropriate clothing, headwear, sun cream and a charged phone.
We were relieved that everyone involved came off the mountain unhurt and unscathed. Be safe, prepare and enjoy our beautiful outdoors.”
