Summer Stars is back in Donegal Libraries for 2023!

Exciting reading-based programme ‘Summer Stars’ has made its way back to Donegal Libraries for 2023 and is free for all children.

Each child is invited to register for the reading adventure at their local library and enjoy reading many books during the summer holidays. All participants will be given a Summer Stars Reading Card to record and track their own progress and a library reward stamp will be added to their reading card at the library after each book read.

Children will be encouraged to continue reading throughout the programme and there will be rewards and incentives along the way.

Summer Stars is a national programme so even when you are on holidays children can avail of the opportunity to pop into any library in Ireland and get their cards stamped and updated. You can find the details of all libraries on our official Donegal Library webpage.

There will be events in Irish and English in branches across Donegal throughout the summer.

This year Cathal Ó Fearraigh will deliver biodiversity workshops on the importance of bees throughout June. There will also be live indoor and outdoor Storytime sessions, treasure chest hunts, themed Lego sessions, arts and craft workshops, book clubs, a cartoon class with Jarla and, of course, children’s books for all ages.

Library staff will also be hosting a range of events so there will be plenty to keep everyone occupied during the summer break from school.

Speaking at the launch of the festival Mayor of Letterkenny MD Cllr Kevin Bradley said: “I am delighted to launch this fantastic literacy programme.

“With a fabulous range of free events in libraries across the county and some free goodies for those taking part, I am sure the children will really enjoy taking part in Summer Stars.

“It is great to see that our libraries have a full schedule of events and that, as always, the service offers a wide range of excellent services for everyone in the community.”
