There will be a strong US-Ukraine influence at this year’s MacGill Summer School in Glenties.
The three-day forum, in association with University of Notre Dame, describes itself as ‘Ireland’s international forum for thought leaders to discuss the critical issues facing the country, Europe, and our world.’
The title of this summer’s school is ‘A New Global Order Precarious & Dangerous?’
Noted speakers include U.S. House of Representatives Congressman Brendan Boyle, whose father hails from Glencolmcille, former President of the European Parliament, Pat Cox, and EU Commissioner Mairéad McGuinness.
Also on the bill are the Ukrainian Ambassador to Ireland, Larysa Gerasko, and Olga Stefanishyna, a member of the Ukrainian Government who is also Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration. Another big name to take to the Highland’s Hotel stage is retired Senior Chinese Colonel, Zhou Bo, a senior fellow of the Centre for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University and a China Forum expert. More speakers are to be added soon, but you can see the updated list here.
Dubbed ‘Electric Picnic for older people’, the MacGill Summer School was founded over forty years ago by former RTE Managing Director, and Ballybofey native, Joe Mulholland and a local committee. It has been directed by him for most of its existence.
It has grown from very modest beginnings to being one of the most important fora in Ireland for the analysis of topics of national and international interest.
In 2023, it will be in-person in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties, and takes place from August 16-19.
