World Cup hero Packie Bonner was back in Donegal at the weekend to officially open the new Dunfanaghy Youths FC pitches.
The grounds were named after the late Callum Friel. A former player from the Creeslough area, he sadly passed away in 2020 aged just 17 following a brave battle with Leukaemia.
Despite a high-profile objection from former Ireland manager, Martin O’Neill, the local boys and girls finally got their new home.
As exclusively revealed by Donegal Daily three years ago, the Derry native was one of a number of individuals who objected to plans for the development at Lurgabrack.
O’Neill lives in London, but owns Horn Head House, a derelict 18th century country house, near to the sportsground.
However, big Packie was more than delighted to cut the ribbon for the impressive new full size and training pitch at Callum Friel Park. And he wasted no time in signing autographs, having a chat and posing for pics with the local stars of the future.
