The Donegal ladies recorded a fine victory over Waterford in Lifford this afternoon in the first round group stages of the All Ireland Senior Championship.
Donegal 2-10
Waterford 1-08
Star forward, Niamh Hegarty, coveted a first-half penalty after she was dragged down as she bore down on the Waterford goal. Over the hour, she racked up an impressive 1-04. Waterford’s goal came after their forwards pressurised Donegal keeper Claire Friel into releasing possession, leaving Lauren McGregor with an open net.
In a close first half, Donegal led 1-06 to 1-02 when the sides went in at the break.
Amy Boyle Carr scored Donegal’s second goal just six minutes into the second half.
The legendary Geraldine McLaughlin was a late inclusion on the team sheet and came on in the 54th minute for the injured Niamh McLaughlin.
Despite a spirited Waterford performance, the home side powered on after the restart and had five points to spare at the final whistle.
Donegal now have to face the defending All Ireland Champions, Meath, in the hope of making it out of the group.
