Letterkenny Councillor Donal Coyle has called for several enhancements to improve the appearance and tidiness of Letterkenny’s new Four Lane route.
As works on the major road project near completion, Cllr Coyle has asked the council to reinstate flower beds, add litter bins and information signage in the area.
However, Donegal County Council responded to say there is no funding available within the budget of the Four Lane project to provide these items.
Cllr Coyle urged the municipal district to consider the benefits that the amenities would bring.
“When one considers the overall cost that the Four Lane is costing, we are talking about very little money to enhance what is going to be a great entrance into Letterkenny,” Cllr Coyle said.
He called for the original flowerbed at the Dry Arch Roundabout to be restored.
“It was a lovely flowerbed with ‘Failte’ and ‘Slan’. It was a lovely welcoming gesture for people coming in and leaving the town. I don’t see why it can’t be replaced,” he said.
Cllr Coyle also called for bins for dog walkers, in order to keep the footpath tidy for the many walkers and cycling using the road. “I think there is a need for bins to be provided along that route, I don’t think it would cost a lot of money,” Cllr Coyle said.
He added that an information board highlighting the rich history and heritage of the town of Letterkenny would not cost a lot either.
“They are little things but very important and very effective,” Cllr Coyle told Tuesday’s meeting of the Municipal District.
After the Four Lane project is completed, the council is now set to carry out an assessment to establish if there is a suitable source of funding for both provision and maintenance of the items, as well as examining a suitable location and if the provision of these items creates a hazard for either the public or maintenance staff.
