Michael Cunningham will be walking from Fife in Scotland to Raphoe, in memory of his grandfather and to raise money for Alzheimer Scotland.
Michael’s grandfather Vincent Hamilton was from Raphoe originally but left for Scotland with his two brothers Jack and Dick in 1947 to find work. He sadly passed away this year at the age of 94 from Alzheimer’s.
Michael, one of 12 grandchildren, is walking the reverse journey in memory of his beloved granddad and to raise funds for Alzheimers Scotland.
His journey started on the 10th June at his grandfather’s home in Carndenen in Fife to the Road Bridge before walking across the country to Ayr and down the coastal path to Cairnryan.
After the ferry to Belfast in Northern Ireland he will walk to Antrim and on to Strabane before finishing off his journey in Raphoe.
The walk covers some 260 miles and is shown on the map below.
“I thought that a good way to both challenge myself and honour him would be to retrace his steps and walk to Raphoe from Cardenden,” Michael said.
