A new €100,000 footbridge was officially opened at Crossroads, Killygordon, yesterday evening.
Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, cut the ribbon at the new structure alongside the historic Milltown Bridge. She was ably assisted by local boy, Jamie Gallen, whose late grandfather, Willie McConaghey, worked on the original bridge.
Lifford Stranorlar MD Cathaoirleach, Cllr Patrick McGowan, praised the local development group, Crossroads and Killygordon Enterprise (CAKE) and Red Hughs GAA Club for spearheading the project. Cllr McGowan was also one of the main drivers.
“This crossborder road serves the local Red Hughs GAA pitch, Monellan Wood walks and Gleneely NS,” Cllr McGowan said.
“A footpath has already been constructed from Monellan woods down to Milltown bridge by funding secured by Red Hugh’s and the CAKE committee. Both committees are grateful to local land owners for giving permission for this much needed works to go ahead.”
The structure is situated on the eastern side of the existing stone arch road bridge near the junction of Monellan Road and Creamery Road.
The current bridge is on average 5.5 metres wide, making it unsuitable for pedestrians and cars to use at the same time.
