The Sheephaven Sub-Aqua Club notes are out.
Try-a-snorkel
Sheephaven SAC held its “Try-a-snorkel” event on a sunny Wednesday evening in Port na Blagh. The club extended an invitation to potential members who were eager to explore beyond the sandy shores and explore the wonders beneath the waves. The event proved to be an enormous success, attracting individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Enthusiastic participants had the chance to meet the club’s members, discover the joy and accessibility of snorkelling, and immerse themselves in the crystal waters of Port na Blagh harbour.
Under the warm sun and watchful eye of the event’s coordinators, Ryan and Hugo, participants donned their neoprene suits, fins, mask and snorkel, and ventured with their qualified buddy to explore a new world. Guided by experienced club members, the event not only introduced newcomers to the thrill of snorkelling in Donegal, but also fostered a sense of community, connecting like-minded individuals who share a passion for the ocean and trying something new.
Magheroarty to Tory Island
Later in the week Sheephaven stepped up to provide crucial boat support for a remarkable open-water swimming endeavour – a daunting challenge from Magheroarty to Tory Island. One intrepid individual, Ger Kennedy, tackled the stretch solo, while Edward Boag and Kelly Admirand completed the feat as a relay team.
It was a long day for the swimmers and support personnel, who worked hand in hand to ensure the safety and success of the endeavour. The swimmers showcased unwavering determination and exceptional stamina to complete their journey against a spring tide, and received a very warm welcome indeed from supporters on their arrival at the shores of Tory.
Inishbofin
Sheehaven’s own Tory team, who are deep in training for their event later this year to raise funds for the club’s Search and Recovery unit, put the last few months to the test on Saturday when they ventured to Inishbofin. A change of scenery from the usual haunts of Port na Blagh or Woodquarter, a group ventured out by boat to Inishbofin to snorkel the return journey to Magheroarty.
As a testament to the hours put in each week the team managed to complete the distance in a club-record breaking time of one hour. Their achievement stands as a testament to their dedication, but complacency has no place when tackling such a venture as the Tory fin swim, and the Tory team are gearing up to intensify their training regimen in the coming weeks.
Causeway Coasts
Although the club’s energy is focusing on the upcoming Golf Fundraiser for their Search and Recovery Unit on June 16th, another adventure is in the pipeline for Sheephaven’s divers next week who look forward to exploring the breath-taking Causeway Coast.
‘X marks the spot’ of Rathlin Island, which offers a variety of marine life and topography distinct to the Donegal shores frequented by Sheephaven. As Sheephaven Sub-Aqua wrap up a week filled with exciting achievements, they eagerly anticipate the thrilling adventure that awaits them on departure from Ballycastle.
