Beachgoers in Dunfanaghy have been treated to some incredible scenes this Friday afternoon with the arrival of a group of basking sharks.
The massive creatures have been spotted feeding in the surf at Killahoey strand.
Basking sharks have two dorsal fins, making it difficult to tell how many there are. It’s thought that between 6 and 8 sharks have gathered in the area.
Basking sharks are the second-largest living fish and are known for their gentle nature, making this sighting a truly special experience for all who witnessed it.
Thanks to Carol Stewart for the photos.

The huge docile creatures have been appearing in many waters close to the coast in recent weeks. They are most frequently sighted in the north Atlantic during the months of April – September while counties Waterford, Cork, Kerry and Donegal comprise the majority of sightings.
