Round 2 of the British Superbikes at Oulton Park continued to thrill over what was a very wet bank holiday weekend.
Kilmacrennan rider Rhys Irwin on his Astro Suzuki was feeling strong following his amazing performance at Silverstone two weeks ago, braved the torrential rain for FP1 & 2 going into qualifying claimed the third fastest lap time placing him on the front row of the grid for Race 1.
With several delays due to heavy rain and poor visibility the race finally got the green light. Gremlins struck Iriwn’s bike with no electrics or engine mapping but he managed to get out onto the sighting lap.
Irwin racing in this premier class with World Supersport competitors was up to the challenge kept a cool head and raced a brave race from flag to flag going across the line in P5.
Race 2 thankfully was a dry race and with all to race for Rhys held third place for much of the race finishing in P5 with tenths of seconds separating the fastest racers.
In his post race interview the ever smiling Rhys said ‘I have had easier days racing it is definitely a day for a wee boat not a race bike.
“This championship has never been as competitive with Booth-Amos racing in World Superbikes, Australian Champion Toparis and Currie back from Europe not to mention the road racers Cooper, Dunlop and Johnston it is such a buzz for me to be able to stick with these guys on track.
“I had no quick shift or electronics working but I kept the bike steady and upright and I am delighted with that result giving solid points for the Championship.”
Rhys as ever thanked those who make all this possible with their financial support especially his local sponsors James Gallagher Oasis Bar Letterkenny and Northwest Customs, Hugh Kelly Tree surgeon Charlotte RK Racing, Principal Insurance, Mondello Park Supporters Club, Medlar Racing and Motorcycling Ireland.
