Work on the replacement of a notorious bridge outside Killybegs is to begin in September.
South west Donegal Councillor, Niamh Kennedy, confirmed the Fintra Bridge and road realignment project will go to tender next month.
“I can confirm that all is going according to plan. The tender for construction will go out next month (May) and construction will start this September, 2023,” she said.
Located on the Kilcar side of Killybegs, the narrow structure is on a vital access route for locals and tourists in South West Donegal.
It is proposed that a new bridge be constructed along with the realignment of approximately 1.4km of the road. A new 1.9km pedestrian and cycle route between Killybegs and Fintra Beach is also part of the project.
“The work will begin at the entrance to Fintra beach, working back towards the GAA club and Fintra school,” continued Cllr Kennedy.
“The shared surface works from there will be a cycle path and walkway. A crossing from the GAA pitch side to Fintra School will be incorporated for safer crossing. The bridge construction and new alignment will progress after this work. This has been a priority for me for a very long time and I am delighted that this strategic piece of infrastructure is moving along nicely. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but good things come to those who wait.”
