A walker who became lost in fog on Sliabh Liag has been safely rescued after a four hour search.
Killybegs Coast Guard was tasked at 11.39 am by Malin Head Coast Guard along with their colleagues in the Donegal Mountain Rescue Team and Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team.
On arrival, and after a briefing of all teams, they started the search from the Bunglas carpark up towards the One Man’s Pass. The Killybegs team also sent out their All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) to the pilgrims path route.
“Considering the heavy fog, and for the safety of our team, they stayed on the path calling out for the casualty periodically,” a spokesperson for the team said.
Due to these conditions, it was not possible to task the Rescue 118 helicopter at the initial time of the callout, but was later dispatched after the visibility had improved.
After a four hour search at heights in excess of 500 metres, the casualty was located by the Killybegs Coast Guard Unit and Donegal MRT and was assessed for any injuries, but was not in need of medical assistance.
“The casualty was walked off the mountain top back to our ATV which took them back to their vehicle. The team were stood down and returned to the station. This was a great example of interagency cooperation and that’s why we train together for days like this,” the spokesperson added.
“Many thanks to Garda Síochána Donegal for their assistance also.”
