Donegal Senior hurlers and the Ladies Senior Football teams both had excellent away wins today in the respective championship games.
The hurlers followed up their fine victory in Armagh last week with another impressive display and victory in Roscommon. They beat the home team by 2-25 to 2-16 to make it three out of three in the Nicky Rackard Cup. This leaves Mickey McCann’s men joint top with Wicklow who will be Donegal’s final opponents in the group games. Before that, Donegal will host Louth – both those games will be in O Donnell Park.
In today’s game, Ronan McDermott, Liam McKinney and Declan Coulter did the bulk of the scoring in a game that was closely contested in the early stages. McDermott’s goal had Donegal 1-10 to 0-10 ahead at halftime and they took control after the break with the three players mentioned keeping the scoreboard ticking over with some help from several others.
A second goal from Sean Ward saw Donegal coast to victory by nine points and a step closer to another Nicky Rackard Cup Final.
At Breffni Park, meanwhile, classy Karen Guthrie made a very welcome return to the Donegal Senior Ladies team and led them to an opening Ulster championship fixture win over Cavan by 1-06 to 0-04, with Guthrie contributing 1-04 of Donegal’s total.
