The North West 10k Committee is delighted to be supporting the Letterkenny Community Development Project who will be one of the beneficiaries from the 2023 event on Bank Holiday Monday, May 1st in Letterkenny.
Letterkenny C.D.P. will share the proceeds with two other charities the St. Bernadette’s Special School, Letterkenny and the Donegal Branch of Multiple Sclerosis Ireland. 10k Chairperson Neil Martin is asking the public to support the three charities that are doing great work to support service users with better facilities and the enhancing quality of their lives.
Letterkenny C.D.P established their project in the town 21 years ago and have planned and organised various programmes over that period to meet the needs of the local community. It is legally constituted as a Company Limited by Guarantee and is governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Association and Standing Orders of the Company.
“We are also a registered Charity whose Management are all volunteers that give their time freely to help those who are vulnerable in our community. We are based in Letterkenny town but outreach many of our programmes throughout Donegal. Our service users are the unemployed, older people, youth at risk, ethnic communities, isolated men and women, lone parents, people on low income, people with disability.
To help keep us up to date with the needs of our community we draw our membership from our service users who form part of our management committee. The following are a variety of the services we provide.’
- Senior Alert Scheme: we install free personal alarms for people aged 65 yrs and over.
- Care and Repair Programme: we carry out minor repairs in the homes of older people, people with disabilities and or people on low income
- Drugs/alcohol misuse: we employ two Outreach Workers to work with service users and their families to help them reduce the harm caused by addiction.
- Rehabilitation Community Employment Scheme: we provide training and development for people in recovery from addiction to enable them to change their lifestyle choices and live a better life.
- Community Employment Scheme for people who are long term unemployed: we provide training and development to the long term employed to help them return to training or employment.
- Working with youth at risk: we organise programmes for young people who are involved in antisocial behaviour due to lack of parental support or facilities.
- Volunteer in the Home Programme: we have volunteers who wish to do voluntary work but are confined to their home for various reasons, so we provide them with the training and materials so they can use their skill to make items for our Charity Shop.
- I.T. in the Home: we visit people in their own home and teach them how to use their mobile phone, laptop, Facebook etc which helps them to reduce isolation and loneliness.
- Letterkenny Men’s Shed: we established a Men’s Shed in partnership with the H.S.E
- Acquired Brain Injury and Stroke rehabilitation unit, National Learning Network and men of all ages and abilities.
- Affordable Childcare: we have a pre-school facility in Letterkenny and make provision for 40 preschool children to prepare them for National School.
“The main reason for the voluntary work of Letterkenny C.D.P. is to make a difference in the community and to give gratitude for the Town and County that they live in.
“We also gain a wonderful sense of achievement, self-worth and fun in our own lives; by working with so many different people from all areas and nationalities.”
