A Donegal County Councillor has called on Commissioner of Irish Lights to give a local lighthouse a makeover.
Councillor Niamh Kennedy says the external boundary walls at Rotten Island Lighthouse need a good painting.
She said “This lovely historic structure needs TLC and we believe it should be painted and brought to its former glory.
“I had asked Irish Lights to paint this wall back in 2015 but they felt it was no longer necessary.
“We feel it is necessary and should be painted again as other lighthouses are. This is probably one of the most viewed lighthouses up close by mariners entering Killybegs Harbour and the photograph of this lighthouse is in the lobby of all the cruise ships as destination Killybegs. It needs a new lease of life.
Listed as a Regional rating, special interest, architectural social and technical significance.
Built in 1837, designed by George Halpin, was automated in 1959 and electrified 1st February 1963.
“Let’s hope the Irish Lights help and bring our little guiding light back to its glory,” said Councillor Kennedy.
