A public meeting will take place in Glencolmcille this weekend to discuss the possibility of converting the local Protestant church for community use.
The meeting will be held in the beautiful St Columba’s Church of Ireland on Saturday at 2pm. Members of the church hierarchy and local community leaders will be present.
“It could be used for the benefit of the community instead of it being closed up for good,” one of the organisers said.
In a similar move in recent weeks, the Milford Reformed Presbyterian Church was also handed over to the local community.
The almost 200 year old Glencolmcille structure, which is not in regular use, was last year used to film a scene from ‘In the Land of Saints and Sinners’ starring Liam Neeson.
The main part of the church, the nave, was originally built on a 6th century monastic site in 1828. The chancel and buttresses were added in 1890 by Samuel Patrick Close, followed by the tower and spire in 1913, by Richard Mills Close.
