Volunteers planted more than 1,000 native Irish trees on the grounds of a south Donegal school last weekend.
The saplings were given a new home on unused land belonging to Magh Éne College.
“We had lots of volunteers come over the weekend who made it happen, including a good contingent of Ukrainians,” a spokesperson for the local Love Woodland group.
“At Love Woodland we are very proud that native saplings are planted and we have a local area which will be a biodiversity haven and a carbon sink in the near future.”
The organisers took the opportunity to thank local businesses who supported them. These included BMG Hardware in Bundoran who provided tools, equipment and mulch. They also thanked Magh Éne College, and teacher James Gilmartin, who supported this community initiative, as well as the TY and 5th year Ag Science students.
Love Woodland is actively looking for more local sites/land for planting in the autumn.
Most of the people who have volunteered with Love Woodland are ordinary folk from the local community – from a marketing manager, a waitress, a council worker, a hairdresser, a farm manager even a ships captain! Everyone who has a basic level of fitness and enjoys outdoors work is welcome to get involved… and sometimes someone brings along some treats!
