A young man has appeared in court after his pit-bull dog escaped from his house and attacked another dog.
Jordan Ferry appeared at Letterkenny District Court after his dog attacked another dog in the Mountaintop area of Letterkenny on August 25th, 2021.
The court was told that a local woman from Foxhills was out walking her dog ‘Pepper’ when another dog crossed the road and began to attack her pet.
The pit-bull sank its teeth into the throat of the other dog and it began to squeal.
The brave dogowner eventually managed to get her hand into the pit-bull’s mouth and released the dog’s grip from her own dog.
Luckily, the dog which was attacked had a thick coat and after being treated at the local vet with painkillers and antibiotics survived the ordeal.
A local young man Jordan Ferry had reported his dog had gone missing earlier.
The court was told the dog, which did have a license, had managed to escape from Mr Ferry’s house when he was out at work.
Solicitor for the accused, Mr Rory O’Brien, said there had been a sad end to the story.
Although the dog had been taken to the dog pound following the attack, Mr Ferry was told by Gardai that the dog had to be brought back to the pound and that was the last he had seen of him.
Mr O’Brien said he hoped the dog had survived as the local warden had taken a shine to him.
He added that the pit-bull was a friendly dog and that his owner was shocked when he was told what had happened.
His client had apologised and said he genuinely hoped the other dog was okay.
Judge Eiteain Cunningham said she wanted to think about the matter saying that attacks by dogs were a serious matter.
Mr O’Brien said this was more of an accident than anything else and suggested that the loss of Mr Ferry’s pet was sufficient punishment adding he had no previous convictions.
Having considered the matter, Judge Cunningham said she found the facts proven but dismissed the case on its merit.
