She’s a wonderfully talented singer and a new sensation on Ireland’s Country Music scene.
But Chelsea Evans has found a new stage on which to shine – after joining her local GAA club’s senior ladies team which begin their new season this weekend.
The Dunfanaghy singer played GAA at underage with St. Michael’s and she’s part of the club’s new senior ladies squad which is making a welcome return to action this weekend after an absence of over ten years playing at adult level.
Their first match in the new season sees them make the long trek to play Malin in Division 3.
And as she prepares for an early start on Sunday morning, Chelsea’s day will run on until the wee small hours as she’s due to take the stage for a concert in the Clanree Hotel in Letterkenny on Sunday night.
Chelsea is looking forward to what promises to be a very busy schedule and says she’s delighted to be back playing GAA again.
“A lot of us haven’t played football in years,” she said.
“I haven’t played myself since I was about 16 so it’s great to get back training and having a senior team for St Michaels Ladies.
“It’s great to have something to progress to, especially for the girls currently playing in minor age groups – they know it doesn’t have to stop there.
“We had our first challenge match recently at The Bridge (against Letterkenny Gaels). The excitement among us all was amazing.
“We know it’s not going to be easy as there are some fantastic teams in our division but we are all just looking forward to being back training and playing for our club again.
“You can definitely tell I haven’t been playing in a long long time.
“One thing I do know is that I definitely won’t be getting a career out of the football anytime soon so I’ll stick to the singing!
“I was so nervous coming back to play as I haven’t played in so long. But most of the girls were all in the same boat and we all support each other which is great.”
Off the pitch, Chelsea recently launched her debut album – ‘Where I Belong’ – and is busy performing across the country.
“The late nights gigging and the early morning training sessions aren’t always a good mix, but we’ve been looking for a senior team for so long, I’m just glad to be able to get back on the pitch and play for my club again”.
