Dunkineely’s first ever St Patrick’s Parade was a huge success with 20 floats and clubs taking part.
Held on Saturday, it had everything from vintage cars and dragons to marching bands and, of course, the main man himself.
Several hundred people came out to watch with over 100 more watching on-line, from all over Ireland and the UK to New Zealand, North America and Ghana.
The feedback was immensely positive, a spokesperson for the organisers said.
A full list of participants, as well as a video and pictures, can be found on the Dunkineely Community Ltd Facebook page.

Sponsors and Volunteers
The organisers would like to say a big thank you to the volunteers on the Dunkineely Community Ltd Board who put the parade together and to all the volunteers who helped on the day.
“And thank you to our sponsors; McLaughlin’s, McIntyre’s, Mac’s, C Fish, C Bio, Emerald Services, JF Shovelin and Molloy and Sons. We’d also like to thank the GAA and C Fish for their car parks and the Garda for their help with traffic.
“Lastly, to Napoli Express, Mrs T’s Ice Cream and Samara thanks for the good food, to the three pubs thanks for the good craic, to face painters Abbey, Michelle and Tanje, and to photographer, Ana Pereira.”
A particular treat on the day was the local Ukrainian kids singing in McIntyres, if you were lucky enough to get in!
Prizes
Prizes on the day were decided by our local Councillor, Niamh Kennedy.
Prize for best float (€200) went to Mac’s Bar, for the touching portrayal of a bar on the back of a lorry.
Cllr Kennedy could not pick out a single winner for the kid’s fancy dress, they were all just too good. So instead, she chose a school! Well done to Dunkineely NS.
Lastly the prize for best interpretation of what Sheelagh might have looked like, went to Abbey Deane.
Killaghtee Festival
With the Dunkineely Parade over, the community is now looking forward to the Killaghtee Festival 2023.
Watch this space for news on an upcoming open meeting for local residents and fans to put forward their ideas on what we should do at the festival.
Because of last year’s success, the organisers will once again be keeping it ‘unique’ by combining local heritage (history and nature), wellbeing and art.
If you want to go that step further and volunteer for the Festival Committee, contact dunkineelycommunity@gmail.com
