Lee McColgan was the cup hero as Cockhill Celtic qualified for a first ever FAI Intermediate Cup final thanks to a memorable win over Ringmahon Rangers.
Ringhmahon Rangers . . . 0, Cockhill Celtic . . . 1
The defender popped up with a wonderful winning goal ten minutes into the second half, driving a volley from outside the box into the back of the net.
McColgan also scored in last weekend’s quarter-final win at Drumcondra. However, this goal will be all the more special as it means Cockhill can now look forward to a cup final at the Aviva Stadium.
For everyone associated with the Inishowen club, it was a day to remember. The supporters who made the long trek to Cork watched as their team more than matched their Munster Senior League hosts.
Both teams created chances in a very even first half. The visitors’ best opportunity fell the way of striker Garbhan Friel who was his goal bound effort brilliantly saved by home goalkeeper, Eric Grimes. The former Derry City stopper, who had a spell in England with Leeds United, had a fine game in goal.
At the other end, Cockhill’s keeper Harry Doherty produced a smart stop to deny Anthony McAlavey.
The winning goal arrived shortly after half time. Substitute Keegan Hegarty got to the by-line and while his cross was only partially cleared, McColgan met the ball perfectly on the half volley and it flew past Grimes.
Rangers sought a way back into the contest but a combination of excellent defending and competent goalkeeping from Doherty ensured Cockhill held firm.
They will meet either Lucan United or Rockmount in the FAI Intermediate Cup final – the other semi final is also taking place today.
