On this coming Sunday 12th March 2023, The Drumboe Martyrs Commemoration Committee will once again as in every year since 1924 walk to the Execution Site at Drumboe Woods and remember those 4 men who were executed there 100 years ago. (Dan Enright, Timothy O’Sullivan, Charlie Daly and Sean Larkin)
1924 saw the first commemoration at Drumboe Woods, led by Chairman, Mr Mc Elhinney. The gathering marched up the avenue, fearlessly ignoring the previous threats by the forces stationed in the nearby castle “if you go to the execution site you’ll never walk down again”. That day as in the preceding years they walked up the Castle avenue and down again. This year will also see that tradition dutifully fulfilled.
Mary Ward, Chairperson of the Drumboe Martyrs Commemoration Committee says: “We note with interest how after 100 years politicians from many parties have finally remembered these young men who died there. We leave it to the reader to decide what may have awakened interest in them at this time.
“In a quite unusual coincidence the Committee note that the speaker on the 100th anniversary (Former Political Prisoner and Republican activist John Mac Elhinney) shares a heritage with that first chairman we previously mentioned.
“Of course it is not at all a coincidence that those who attend this commemoration are the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of those who sheltered and fed these young men and who, in many cases, fought beside them 100 years ago.”
The Committee extends a warm invitation to all who wish to attend on Sunday 12th March 2023. to Commemorate Dan Enright (Kerry) Timothy O’Sullivan (Kerry) Sean Larkin (Derry) Charly Daly (Kerry) who died in defence of an all-Ireland democracy 14th March 1923.
