The Tírchonaill Commemoration Committee has outlined a series of inclusive events to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the execution of the Drumboe Martyrs in 1923.
Speaking in advance of the Spring School this Saturday, chair of the committee, Maria Doherty said “The Spring School is part of a series of inclusive events to mark the 100 year anniversary of the execution of four young republican soldiers in Drumboe on the 14 March 1923.
“The Spring School is a free event and is open to all members of the public and you can register to attend at this link https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/547672953547
“Charles Daly, Timothy O Sullivan and Daniel Enright from Kerry were executed alongside Sean Larkin from Derry during the bitter civil war period after the introduction of emergency powers by the Free State Government.
“I am particularly looking forward to welcoming members of the families of the martyrs to the Spring School on Saturday.
“The lineup of speakers features several professors of history in universities in Ireland and further afield, the past president of the Donegal Historical society, award winning historians and a documentary film-maker.
“I have no doubt that the Spring School will be an interesting and wide ranging discussion on the events that preceded the executions of the Drumboe Martyrs in 1923 as well as political events since and the political future of our Island.
“It will be an opportunity for us to reflect on our history as well as considering our future and that of future generations.
“I also look forward to welcoming the Caothaoirleach of Kerry County Council, John Francis Flynn and Cathaoirleach of Mid Ulster District Council, Cora Corry to open sessions at the Spring School as representatives of the regions the martyrs came from.
“An invitation has also been extended to Donegal County Council and elected representatives across the political spectrum.”
