Irish Independent Photographer Mark Condren has been awarded Press Photographer of the Year 2023 for a record sixth time.
Mr Condren’s portfolio of award-winning photographs from 2022 included a powerful moment at the scene of the Creeslough tragedy last October. In the image (above), a garda is consoling a woman as she is led to the site of the explosion. A group watches on from the door of a home next door that had its windows blown out from the blast.
Speaking on the Late Late Show last night, Mark said he was moved by many of the events he covered in 2022, including Creeslough and the funeral of young Offaly woman Ashling Murphy.
“There are some jobs that we cry at too,” he said.
Of the Creeslough photo, he said: “The picture does tell a thousand words and I know that when I took it, that really told a story. There was the compassion between the guard and that lady.
“The community up there were unbelievable, and the guards and the emergency services.”
Mark Condren is an award-winning photographer from Castletownroche, a small town in Co Cork, Ireland. He also holds a European policing photography award.
