The Barrack Hill Town Park steering committee have announced the commencement of works on the refurbishment of the playpark.
Works are due to commence on the 6th of March and the playpark will be closed for 8 weeks to facilitate work on the project.
The hazardous climbing wall will be removed in the obstacle course area so that it can reopen and a new playground will be in place at the site of the existing playground.
“It has taken many years of effort and it is great for the community that the project is finally at this stage,” the committee said.
Following a meeting with Donegal County Council in May 2021 the committee outlined 3 goals for the park including playground improvements and obstacle course reopening, a safe cycling and walking route and a covered space for shelter, picnics and events.
“In November 2021 we were delighted to secure Slainte care funding of €124,000, with the view to improving mental and physical health and wellbeing in the community,” said Carmel Doherty, Chairperson of the BHTPSC
Research carried out early in 2021, through multiple surveys in the community and in the schools showed that many parents drove from Carndonagh to Muff and Buncrana to access good play facilities for their families. Furthermore, there was no equipment for children with additional needs and the community wanted the obstacle course to be opened as a priority.
“A lot of work has gone into the redevelopment to make sure the required improvements to the playground as outlined by the local community were met,” added Marianne O’Connor, playground officer.
