An amazing view of the Northern Lights is visible across many parts of Donegal this evening (Sun).
Many people from various parts of Donegal including Ardara, Inishowen, Letterkenny, Arranmore Island and mnay other places are posting amazing pictures on social media this evening.
The picture above was taken by the guys from The Arranmore Ferry and posted on their Facebook page.
It is one of the most spectacular displays of the aurora borealis for a considerable period of time.
It had been anitpcated that tonight was going to be a perfect time to see the natural light wonder show.
The Northern lights are shafts or curtains of coloured light visible on occasion in the night sky.
The origin of the aurora begins on the surface of the sun when solar activity ejects a cloud of gas. Scientists call this a coronal mass ejection (CME).
If one of these reaches earth, taking about 2 to 3 days, it collides with the Earth’s magnetic field. This field is invisible, and if you could see its shape, it would make Earth look like a comet with a long magnetic ‘tail’ stretching a million miles behind Earth in the opposite direction of the sun.
Why not get out and see if you can see the dancing lights in the skyline near your town or village tonight?
And if you do – send your pictures to info@donegaldaily.com and we’ll post them.
