A Donegal man is behind moves to set up a new farmers’ organisation.
Liam McLaughlin created the Ireland’s Farm Discussion Group on Facebook four years ago – it now has over 10,000 members.
The Inishowen farmer organised an inaugural meeting in Athlone on Sunday which attracted more than 100 people.
The gathering heard they should run candidates in the next General Election in 2025, according to The Farming Independent.
Speaking from the top table, Mr McLoughlin urged farmers to stay united and warned that urgent actions are necessary if Irish farmers are to survive.
“We are not being represented (by the farming organisations), we wouldn’t be here today if we were being represented,” he said.
“Let’s pull together and try to do something together, because if we don’t, we’re finished.”
He added they need to set up a co-op, a purchasers group, a new farmers organisation and ‘a political party.’
The meeting committed to holding another meeting in Athlone in four or five weeks.
